Households in transition in Portugal and Spain

1Between 1991 and 2022, the average household size in Portugal fell from 3.1 to 2.5 people and that of Spain, from 3.3 to 2.4 people. Regardless of population growth, this reduction explains 85% and 68% of the increase in the number of households in Portugal and Spain, respectively.

2Single-person households increased by 53% in Portugal and 81% in Spain compared with 1991. Households with five or more people fell by 70% and 73%, respectively.

3From an individual perspective, people share, on average, fewer years with both parents, reside fewer years with children and, at older ages, spend more time alone.

4Between 1991 and 2022, the average number of years that people live alone increased from 4.2 to 5.8 in Portugal, and from 3.8 to 7.5 in Spain.
